To begin with, Golf Solitaire is played with a complete deck of 52 playing cards. From here onwards, seven columns are dealt, each consisting of five face-up overlapping cards, with only the exposed card at the bottom of each column available for play. The remaining cards are placed face down to form the stock (and puzzle to the game itself). Cards are turned one at a time from the stock to a single waste pile where building occurs by transferring exposed column cards as you progress with draws and pairs in the game. The main goal is to transfer all the cards from the seven columns to the single waste pile as quickly as possible.

A pair is built and is carried out on the single waste pile whenever an exposed card is paired with a card draw that is either an ascending or descending sequence regardless of suit. For example, either the 2 valued card or the 4 valued card, may be built on a 3 valued card. Sequences may turn the corner with Kings building on Aces and Aces building on Kings. When no more cards from the columns can be transferred to the waste pile, a card from the stock is dealt to the waste pile and building resumes. When the stock is exhausted, and no more building can occur, then the game is over.

The key is to scan the cards really quickly to see which card might release the best initial sequence. With Golf Solitaire, your score is entirely relying on how much time it took you to clear all the columns. To get you inclined and familiarized with the challenge, it is best to keep playing Golf endlessly. With this, you find yourself playing on instinct and staging contingencies with your build, along with calculating for several moves ahead.
